TIM Transition to Version 2.0
Overview
The Travel Impact Model (TIM) is evolving to Version 2.0, introducing major enhancements aimed at improving the accuracy, transparency, and usability of emissions calculations for flights. This update includes key changes to methodology and data structure, ensuring better alignment with current industry standards and practices.
Key Updates in TIM 2.0
1. Adoption of the Latest EEA Tier 3 Methodology
TIM will now use the European Environment Agency (EEA) 2023 Aviation Report to estimate fuel burn, replacing the 2019 version.
This change reflects the most up-to-date methodologies for emissions modeling.
2. Enhanced Flight Distance Accuracy
Great Circle Distance (GCD) will remain the baseline for flight distance calculations.
A distance correction feature will be introduced to account for deviations due to real-world factors like air traffic and routing inefficiencies, providing more realistic emissions estimates.
3. Emissions Allocation for Cargo
Emissions will now be apportioned between passengers and cargo, addressing the fact that many commercial flights transport both. This change ensures a more accurate representation of per-passenger emissions.
4. Versioning Policy and Longevity
TIM 2.0 introduces a clear versioning system:
Major Versions: Represent substantial changes to methodology or data, potentially affecting comparability with previous versions.
Minor Versions: Incremental updates to refine calculations or incorporate new data while maintaining consistency.
Major versions will be supported for a minimum of 24 months, providing users ample time to transition.
5. Typical Flight Emissions
A new methodology for calculating Typical Flight Emissions will replace the Market Reference Emissions dataset. This approach ensures better transparency, reproducibility, and alignment with industry practices.
Important Dates
November 13, 2024: Launch of Typical Flight Emissions methodology.
December 11, 2024: Official release of TIM 2.0.
Actions for Users
Ensure proper communication of TIM versions in emissions reporting for clarity and accuracy.
